These creamy crockpot garlic mashed potatoes are the perfect set-it-and-forget-it side dish. Made with Yukon Gold potatoes, garlic, and simple ingredients, they’re kid-approved and ideal for weeknight dinners or holiday feasts.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 pounds Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and cut into 2-inch chunks
  • 6 cloves garlic, peeled and smashed
  • 1 cup chicken broth (or vegetable broth for vegetarian)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cut into cubes
  • 1 cup whole milk, warmed
  • 1 teaspoon salt, plus more to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper, freshly ground
  • 1/4 cup sour cream (optional)
  • Fresh chives or parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prep the potatoes: Peel the Yukon Gold potatoes and cut them into 2-inch chunks. Place in a bowl of cold water to prevent browning.
  2. Smash the garlic: Smash the garlic cloves with the flat side of a knife to release flavor.
  3. Layer in the slow cooker: Drain and pat dry the potatoes. Place in the slow cooker with smashed garlic, chicken broth, and salt. Stir to combine.
  4. Cook on low: Cover and cook on low for 4 to 5 hours, or on high for 2 to 3 hours, until potatoes are fork-tender.
  5. Add the butter and milk: Add cubed butter and warm milk to the cooked potatoes.
  6. Mash or mix: Mash with a potato masher for chunky texture or use a hand mixer on low speed for about 30 seconds for smooth potatoes. Add more warm milk if needed.
  7. Stir in the sour cream: If using, stir in sour cream. Adjust salt and pepper to taste.
  8. Keep warm: Switch slow cooker to warm setting. Potatoes can be kept warm for up to 2 hours. Stir occasionally and add a splash of warm milk if they thicken.

Notes

For best results, use Yukon Gold potatoes and warm the milk before adding. Do not overmix to avoid gluey texture. Potatoes can be kept warm in the slow cooker for up to 2 hours. Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 4 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
