These easy baked apple dumplings feature tender apples wrapped in flaky crescent roll dough, topped with a rich homemade caramel sauce. Perfect for weeknight cravings or last-minute dinner parties, they come together in under 45 minutes with simple ingredients.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp recommended)
  • 1 can (8 oz) refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of sea salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease an 8×8 or 9×9 baking dish.
  2. Wash apples and remove cores using a paring knife or apple corer, creating a hollow center without cutting through the bottom. Cut each apple in half.
  3. In a small bowl, mix granulated sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  4. Unroll crescent roll dough and separate into 8 triangles. Place one apple half on the wide end of each triangle. Sprinkle about 1 teaspoon of cinnamon sugar into the hollow center. Wrap dough around apple, stretching slightly to cover, and pinch seams to seal. Place seam-side down in prepared dish.
  5. Brush tops with melted butter and sprinkle any remaining cinnamon sugar over the dumplings.
  6. In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine brown sugar, 1/4 cup butter, and heavy cream. Stir constantly until butter melts and sugar dissolves, about 3-4 minutes. Let simmer 1-2 minutes until slightly thickened. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla and sea salt.
  7. Bake dumplings for 18-22 minutes, until dough is golden brown and apples are tender.
  8. Let cool 5 minutes. Drizzle with caramel sauce and serve warm, optionally with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

For best results, use firm apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp. Seal dough well to prevent leakage. Caramel can burn quickly, so stir constantly. Dumplings can be assembled up to 24 hours ahead and refrigerated; add 5 minutes to baking time. Leftover dumplings keep in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
