A warm, spiced mulled wine made effortlessly in a slow cooker with orange, cinnamon, and cloves. Perfect for holiday gatherings or cozy nights in.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 bottle (750 ml) dry red wine (Merlot, Zinfandel, or Cabernet Sauvignon)
  • 1 large orange (navel or Valencia), sliced into thin rounds
  • 3–4 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 teaspoon whole cloves
  • 2–3 whole star anise pods
  • 2–3 tablespoons honey or maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup brandy or Grand Marnier (optional)
  • 2–3 thin slices fresh ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice berries (optional)

Instructions

  1. Wash the orange and slice into thin rounds (about 1/4-inch thick). Set aside 2-3 slices for garnish. Juice the remaining slices into a small bowl, keeping the peels.
  2. Pour the entire bottle of red wine into the slow cooker. Add honey or maple syrup and stir gently until dissolved.
  3. Add cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, star anise, allspice berries (if using), fresh ginger slices, orange slices, and reserved juice. Stir gently.
  4. If using brandy or Grand Marnier, pour it in and stir once more.
  5. Cover and set slow cooker to Low. Cook for 2-3 hours. Do not use High; the wine should steam but not boil.
  6. After 2 hours, taste and adjust sweetness or spices as desired.
  7. Turn slow cooker to Warm. Ladle into mugs, garnishing each with an orange slice and a cinnamon stick. Optionally strain through a fine-mesh sieve before serving.
  8. Serve immediately, warning guests to sip slowly as the wine is hot.

Notes

Do not boil the wine; low and slow is key. Start with 1/2 teaspoon cloves and adjust to taste. Use a wine you’d drink. Prep ingredients the night before for easy party hosting. Double the batch for larger gatherings.
