Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 box instant hot cocoa mix (3040 packets)
  • 1 gallon whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup chocolate syrup
  • 1 bag mini marshmallows (10 oz)
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup white chocolate chips
  • 1/4 cup sprinkles
  • 46 candy canes, crushed
  • 1/4 cup crushed cookies (graham crackers, vanilla wafers, or Oreos)
  • 1/4 cup shredded coconut
  • 1/4 cup toffee bits
  • 1/4 cup caramel sauce
  • 1/4 cup chocolate syrup (extra for drizzling)
  • 1 can whipped cream

Instructions

  1. Make the base cocoa: In a slow cooker or stockpot, combine 8 cups of milk with the contents of 10 packets of hot cocoa mix. Whisk until the powder dissolves. Add the vanilla extract and chocolate syrup. Stir well. If using a slow cooker, set it on low. If using a pot, warm it over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until steaming but not boiling.
  2. Set up the toppings bar: While the cocoa heats, arrange small bowls on a table or counter. Pour each topping into its own bowl. Use labels to identify each one. Group them: marshmallows and whipped cream on one side, crunchy toppings on the other, syrups in the middle.
  3. Crush the candy canes: Put the candy canes in a ziplock bag. Seal it, then let the kids take turns smashing them with a rolling pin. Aim for small pieces, not powder.
  4. Prepare the syrups: Pour the caramel sauce and extra chocolate syrup into small squeeze bottles if available. Otherwise, leave them in their original bottles with the caps on.
  5. Warm the mugs: If using ceramic mugs, run them under hot water for a few seconds before serving. For paper cups, skip this step.
  6. Serve and let them build: Ladle the hot cocoa into mugs, filling them about 3/4 full. Let each person add their own toppings. Start with whipped cream, then marshmallows, then sprinkles, then the crunchy stuff. Syrups go on last.
  7. Keep the cocoa warm: Leave the slow cooker on warm or low throughout the event. Stir it every 30 minutes to prevent a skin from forming. If it starts to thicken, add a splash of milk.

Notes

Don’t boil the milk—warm it gently to avoid a skin. Double the base recipe for a crowd. Set up a ‘no double-dipping’ rule with separate spoons. Crush candy canes right before serving to prevent clumping. Test your cocoa mix first for sweetness. Keep a wet cloth nearby for sticky fingers.
