This honey garlic salmon in foil is a quick, easy, and delicious weeknight dinner that comes together in about 20 minutes. The foil packets keep the salmon incredibly moist while the honey caramelizes into a luscious, sticky sauce with minimal cleanup.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 salmon fillets (about 6 ounces each, skin on or off)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 3 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free)
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar (unseasoned)
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger (optional)
  • 2 green onions, thinly sliced (for garnish)
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds, toasted (for garnish)
  • Fresh cilantro or parsley, roughly chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Tear off four sheets of heavy-duty aluminum foil, each about 12 inches long. If using standard foil, double up each sheet for extra strength.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together the honey, low-sodium soy sauce, minced garlic, rice vinegar, sesame oil, and grated ginger (if using). Set aside.
  3. Pat each salmon fillet dry with a paper towel. Season both sides lightly with salt and black pepper. Place each fillet in the center of a foil sheet, skin-side down if you left the skin on.
  4. Drizzle a little olive oil over each fillet, then spoon the honey garlic sauce generously over the top (about 2 tablespoons per fillet). Fold the foil over the salmon, then crimp the edges tightly to create a sealed packet, leaving a little space inside for steam to circulate.
  5. Place the packets on a baking sheet, seam-side up. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, depending on the thickness of your fillets. The salmon is done when it flakes easily with a fork and the internal temperature reaches 145°F (63°C).
  6. Carefully open one packet to check for doneness. Let the packets rest for 2 minutes on the counter. Transfer the salmon to plates or serve directly in the foil. Spoon any extra sauce from the packet over the top.
  7. Sprinkle with sliced green onions, sesame seeds, and fresh cilantro or parsley. Serve immediately over steamed rice, quinoa, or alongside a simple green salad.

Notes

Pat the salmon dry for best results. Use heavy-duty foil to prevent tearing. For a thicker glaze, open packets and broil for the last 2 minutes. Salmon can be cooked from frozen, but thaw first for best texture. Packets can be assembled up to 4 hours ahead.
