This easy banana bread with chocolate chips and walnuts is a quick, one-bowl recipe that delivers a moist, tender crumb with pockets of melted chocolate and crunchy walnuts. Perfect for last-minute potlucks, breakfast, or a comforting snack.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 medium to large ripe bananas (about 1 ½ cups mashed)
  • ⅓ cup (75g) unsalted butter, melted
  • ¾ cup (150g) granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, at room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 ½ cups (190g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
  • ½ cup (90g) semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • ½ cup (60g) chopped walnuts

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan with butter or cooking spray, or line it with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, mash the ripe bananas with a fork until mostly smooth (about 1 ½ cups).
  3. Add the melted butter, granulated sugar, egg, and vanilla extract to the mashed bananas. Stir with a whisk or fork until well combined.
  4. In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, salt, and ground cinnamon.
  5. Pour the dry ingredients into the wet mixture. Use a spatula to fold gently until just combined—do not overmix.
  6. Gently fold in the semi-sweet chocolate chips and chopped walnuts. Reserve about 2 tablespoons of chocolate chips to sprinkle on top.
  7. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and spread evenly. Sprinkle the reserved chocolate chips on top, pressing them gently into the batter.
  8. Bake for 50-60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs. If the top browns too quickly, tent loosely with foil after 40 minutes.
  9. Let the bread cool in the pan on a wire rack for 10-15 minutes, then lift it out using the parchment paper overhang and transfer to the rack to cool completely before slicing.

Notes

For best results, use very ripe (spotty) bananas. Do not overmix the batter to avoid tough bread. Let the bread cool completely before slicing for clean cuts. This bread tastes even better on day two.
